World Health Organisation (WHO)

Close collaboration is seen between healthcare officials from many countries and the World Health Organization (WHO). Collaboration with the WHO is specifically highlighted in the legislation in the EU, with reference to scientific harmonisation, technical cooperation and international collaboration on pharmacovigilance. At the Commission level there are annual meetings between senior officials from the EU and WHO. In these meetings, general topics in the medicines field are discussed. These meetings and collaborations have an impact on EU legislation.

Also, at the EMA level there is collaboration with the WHO. Joint regulatory capacity building is the purpose of this work. Furthermore, the EMA may assist the WHO in assessment tasks on medicines intended for markets outside the EU.
