1. Introduction
Health Technology Assessment (HTA) helps decision-makers understand the short- and long-term effects of using a health technology within a health system or society. It relies on input from different disciplines and expert analysis. Medicines approved by regulators must show a favourable benefit-risk ratio in a specific population based on information from studies completed while being under development. HTA goes further — it looks at whether a medicine offers added value compared to current standard treatments. This often requires more evidence from a broader range of sources than those used by the pharmaceutical company in pursuit of a marketing authorisation from regulatory authorities.
